Leadership and Governance

Learn more about the leadership and governance structure at the Catholic Institute of West Africa

CIWA is being administered in accordance with its 1994 Statutes which was successfully revised in 2001.  Other documents used in the general day to the day administration of CIWA include:

  1. CIWA Staff Conditions of Service approved in October 2002;
  2. Guidelines for academic staff promotion approved in 2005 and revised in  2010;
  3. CIWA Accounting Manual approved in 1998.  These documents are implemented together with Council and Senate decisions.

The Chancellor

The administrative structure of the Institute is hierarchical, starting with the Office of the Chancellor.  The Chancellor of the Institute is normally the President of RECOW/CERAO.  He oversees the Institute on behalf of the Holy See.

Governing Council

Their duties are as contained in the Statutes. Suffice to point out that the Council is headed by the Chairman who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the Institute.  The current Chairman is Most Rev. Hilary O. Okeke, bishop of Nnewi Diocese.  The Governing Council has competence over all ordinary matters and affairs of the Institute. Thus, its role is both crucial and central.  The Council meets at least twice a year, once every semester.

The Senate

Senate is the highest internal ruling body of the Institute. The Rector is the Chairman of the Senate.  It takes decisions on all academic matters as well as implements the decisions of the Governing Council. Other internal organs of the Institute refer their proposals and recommendations to the Senate for approval and implementation.

Faculty/Departmental Boards

The Faculty Board/Departmental Board and their ad hoc committees are headed by the Deans and /or Heads of Departments are no less important, even though their decisions are consultative.

CENTRAL ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE

At the administrative level, the Institute has the following offices which effectively see to the day to day running of the Institute:

Office of the Rector

The Rector sees to the general functioning of the institute.

The Registrar

The Registrar is the chief administrative officer of the institute according to CIWA Statutes. He/she is also the archivist of the Institute. This office oversees all admissions, correspondences, preparation of meetings, etc.  It is headed by the Registrar, who is equally the chief administrative officer for external communications.  Others include the Personnel Officer, the Secretary to the Registrar, the ICT Operator and the Assistance Secretary to the Registrar.

The Bursar

The Bursar is in-charge of all finances and financial records.  He is assisted by a trained accountant, an assistant accountant and a Youth Corp member.

The Librarian

He/She administers the Institute’s library in close surveillance of the Rector.
